Applications for Deputy Sheriff

DEPUTY SHERIFF: To qualify to be considered for a Deputy Sheriff position, certain requirements must be met: 1. Possess a high school diploma with two years experience in law enforcement or corrections. 2. Have a current PA driver's license. 3. Possess adequate physical and mental health to withstand rigorous activity. 4. Must become Act 120/Act 2 certified within one year of employment.

bulletApplicants must pass an agility test prior to application. The Sheriff conducts the test every two (2) years. The agility test is advertised in The Erie Times News and is posted in the Erie County Courthouse.

bulletWritten Exam: All applicants who have successfully passed the agility will be given a written exam.

bulletApplicants who received a passing score on both tests will then be placed on a hiring list; vacancies will be filled based on interviews of qualified applicants.

bulletSelected applicants must pass a psychological exam. Applicants will then required to attend and graduate from The Pennsylvania Deputy Training Academy. The Academy now maintains 760 hours of training.

CLERICAL STAFF: As positions open in the Sheriff's Office, The Erie County Personnel Department will post all job qualifications. Applications will not be accepted without a job posting.


All applicants for positions with the Sheriff's Department must submit a County Employment Application and a Bid Form stating their qualifications to the Personnel Department at the Erie County Court House, Room 112, Erie, PA 16501. Applications may be made Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. (Forms available for download on the County's Web site)
